PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
World Suicide Prevention Day, 10 September (5 September 2021)
Motion Details
That this House recognises that suicide is among the top 20 leading causes of death globally for people of all ages and that, according to the World Health Organisation, an estimated 703,000 people die by suicide worldwide each year; acknowledges the impact of the covid-19 pandemic on mental health and the provision of in-person mental health support across the UK; pays tribute to the efforts of those working in mental health services, including in NHS 24, who have been doing an incredible job in very difficult circumstances; supports the aims of the International Association for Suicide Prevention in raising awareness and reducing stigma and encouraging meaningful and safe conversations around suicide through its World Suicide Prevention Day themes; commends this year’s theme of creating hope through action, as a reminder that there is an alternative to suicide and that, through action, everyone can make a difference to someone in their darkest moments; and resolves to take every opportunity to support people experiencing a suicidal crisis and those who have lost a loved one to suicide.
