PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
EFFECT OF THE GOVERNMENT'S OPEN ENROLMENT POLICY ON PUPILS IN DARWEN LANCASHIRE (31 March 1993)
Motion Details
That this House expresses serious concern at the effects of the Government's policy of open enrolment upon pupils in Darwen, Lancashire, transferring to secondary schools in September 1993; notes that this has resulted in a significant number of Darwen pupils being allocated to schools in Blackburn, while pupils from Blackburn have been offered places at Darwen secondary schools; congratulates County Councillor Eileen Entwistle and Labour controlled Lancashire County Council on their attempts to resolve this worrying state of affairs; and calls upon the Government to make proper provision to enable pupils from Darwen primary schools who wish to do so to transfer to Darwen secondary schools within a more reasonable travelling distance from their homes, this avoiding undesirable and lengthy journeys to schools in Blackburn.
