PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
Mohammed Ramadhan and Husain Moosa in Bahrain (8 July 2020)

Motion Details

That this House notes that Bahrain’s Court of Cassation could overrule the death sentences of Mohamed Ramadhan and Husain Moosa, two prisoners sentenced to death on the basis of false confessions extracted under torture; notes that the Foreign and Commonwealth Office has been following the case closely over the last few years; recognises that independent experts from the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT) assessed Bahraini investigations into the men’s torture to be seriously flawed and the judgment sentencing them to death on the basis of torture evidence as critically flawed; acknowledges that Pete Wetherby QC, Executive Member of the Bar Human Rights Committee, has stated that, upholding the convictions in these cases would be wholly inconsistent with Bahrain’s international obligations; notes that that there are 10 other individuals in Bahrain who have exhausted legal remedies and are at risk of imminent execution; acknowledges the UK’s principled opposition to the death penalty in any circumstances; and calls on the highest levels of the Government to make effective representations for the quashing of Mohamed’s and Husain’s death sentences and a halt to the execution of all other individuals facing the death penalty in Bahrain.
