PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
Teaching of British colonial history in schools (3 June 2020)
Motion Details
That this House calls for the teaching of British colonial history in school curricula across the UK; recognises that much of Britain's wealth was built upon brutal suppression and the embedding of racism and division across the world; that great cities such as Glasgow, Liverpool and Bristol were built upon the investments of the slave trade; that our collective lack of understanding of Britain's role in cultivating notions of race and racial hierarchy misinforms discussions about racism in Britain to this day; and notes that unpicking how and why racial prejudice was constructed would make for a more sophisticated discussion about racism now and would erode the false notion that Britain was ever exclusively “white”.
