PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
VAT on energy bills (25 March 2020)

Motion Details

That this House commends the Government’s implementation of a VAT referral for businesses during the covid-19 outbreak; further commends the Government for ensuring that energy suppliers offer funding support for people who are unable to top up their meters, which has helped more than four million people; notes that, due to self-isolation orders given by the Government, the cost of energy bills and products are likely to dramatically increase; further notes that uSwitch estimates that self-isolating could increase energy bills by £195 a year for people on poor-value deals; notes that many people on low incomes have been made redundant and will struggle to find alternative employment as the outbreak worsens; and calls on the Government to implement a VAT moratorium on energy bills and products.
