PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY (7 June 1993)
Motion Details
That this House congratulates the World Health Organisation on establishing 31st May 1993 as World No Tobacco Day; notes with alarm that the tobacco epidemic is getting worse, that in the next century one person will die every four seconds from smoking, that annual global deaths from smoking will rise from the present three million to 10 million by 2030 and the bulk of that increase will be in the Third World; recognises that only concerted government action can end this escalating human sacrifice on the altar of tobacco companies' profits; and calls on this Government to set an example by establishing a comprehensive tobacco control programme which would begin with the immediate banning of tobacco advertising and sponsorship.
