PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
Tribute to Ron Hogg CBE (7 January 2020)

That this House notes with sadness the passing of Ron Hogg CBE, the first and much loved and respected Police, Crime and Victims' Commissioner for County Durham and Darlington who passed away following a brave battle with motor neurone disease; recognises his huge contribution to policing by serving as a police officer for 30 years including during the 2002 FIFA World Cup where he led English police units tackling football hooliganism in the host countries of Japan and South Korea and by leading Durham Constabulary to be rated outstanding four times; further recognises that he pioneered innovative schemes to tackle re-offending, restorative justice and progressive drugs policy reform and during his final months campaigned passionately for a change in the law on assisted dying; extends sincere sympathies to his wife Maureen, his family, many friends and colleagues; recognises that he was one of the most significant figures in the criminal justice sector; and calls for an award to be created in his honour, and to carry his name as a lasting memorial, to recognise outstanding contributions to public policy development in the criminal justice sector.
