PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
SUPPORTING ELECTRIC VEHICLE UPTAKE IN POLLUTED AREAS (17 July 2019)

That this House recognises the importance of electric vehicles in achieving the UK’s ambitious climate commitments, including its goal of net zero road emissions by 2040 and net zero emissions by 2050; further recognises the importance of encouraging electric vehicle use for mitigating against air pollution and improving air quality, which remains a pervasive issue in the UK, as shown by recent mapping done by the Friends of the Earth organization which revealed almost 2,000 locations across England, Wales and Northern Ireland to have levels of air pollution that exceed safety limits; considers the Government’s plan to phase out the plug-in grants currently available for electric vehicles following 2020, which could risk leaving a significant gap in consumer incentives for electric vehicle uptake; and calls on the Government to provide greater financial incentives for electric vehicle uptake particularly among residents of polluted areas, who suffer disproportionately the effects of conventional petrol and diesel vehicle use on human and environmental health, as well as to bolster its plans to support electric vehicle uptake beyond 2020 and reduce overall vehicle use.
