PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
GOVERNMENT REJECTION OF INQUIRY INTO EVENTS AT ORGREAVE ON 18 JUNE 1984 (2 November 2016)

That this House believes that the Home Secretary is wrong not to set up an inquiry into events at Orgreave in 1984; is aware of the numerous and well documented reports that striking miners were beaten by police batons, charged by police horses, and then falsely accused of riot; is concerned by reports that South Yorkshire police had decided in advance to charge arrested strikers with riot, which carried a life sentence; notes that the Independent Police Complaints Commission found evidence of perjury and perversion of the course of justice; further believes that the South Yorkshire Police must be held to account for their actions, as they were when the Hillsborough inquiry identified a culture of malpractice in the police force's handling of that disaster; and believes that the refusal to hold an inquiry will be seen as an attempt by the Government to stop the public knowing whether instructions were given to the South Yorkshire Police by the Government in 1984 as to how they should deal with the striking miners.
