PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
STATUS OF BRITISH CITIZENS RESIDENT IN THE EU AND EU CITIZENS RESIDENT IN THE UK (28 June 2016)

That this House recognises that there is anxiety amongst EU citizens currently residing in the UK and British citizens residing in the EU about their own and their families' situation following the result of the EU referendum; notes that the rights of EU citizens living in the UK and British citizens in the EU that are incorporated in the Treaty of European Union may no longer be applicable if the UK invokes Article 50 and leaves the European Union; celebrates the huge contribution that EU citizens are making to Britain and that British citizens abroad make to the member states of the European Union where they reside; congratulates British Future, New Europeans, Open Europe, the Institute of Directors, Migrant Voice, Migration Watch, Policy Exchange and the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants in calling for a consensus in the issue of acquired residency rights in advance of the referendum; and calls on the Government to move swiftly to clarify the current position regarding the legal status of EU citizens in the UK and British citizens in the EU in a situation where their Treaty-based rights are at risk of being no longer applicable, and to agree with the European Council the necessary safeguards and guarantees to protect the future status of these citizens, in order to remove uncertainty and allay their concerns.
