PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
PROTECTION OF ASIAN ELEPHANTS (26 May 2015)
Motion Details
That this House notes that Asian elephants are endangered and could become extinct; is concerned that wild elephants are threatened by capture from the wild, habitat loss and poaching for ivory; is further concerned that captured elephants are often subject to isolation, starvation, dehydration and then prolonged beatings and are wounded with metal hooks in order to break their spirit and make them submissive; further notes that the welfare of captive elephants is often very poor with many being kept tightly chained for long periods with very limited movement and abused; calls on UK tourists not to visit elephant attractions other than wildlife reserves and genuine sanctuaries; and calls on the Government to take forward its manifesto commitment to support the Indian Government in its efforts to protect the Asian elephant.
