PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
ROYAL MAIL (13 September 2010)

That this House opposes proposals put forward by the Government to privatise Royal Mail; notes that Royal Mail's profits rose by 26 per cent. to 404 million in 2010; fully supports the modernisation programme agreed by management and unions; further notes that these modernisation plans are fully funded and require no external financial investment from private companies; believes that any decision to remove Royal Mail from public ownership would be deeply unpopular with the public; fears that the Government's proposals will result in increased prices for customers; and calls on the Government to re-examine other ways to support the modernisation of Royal Mail and in doing so ensure that Royal Mail remains a wholly publicly-owned organisation.
