PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
HUMAN RIGHTS IN NORTH KOREA (26 March 2007)

Motion Details

That this House warmly welcomes the report Failure to Protect - A Call for the UN Security Council to Act in North Korea, commissioned by former Czech Republic President Vaclav Havel, former Norwegian Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Elie Wiesel, calling for the opening of parallel-track discussions on humanitarian and human rights concerns in North Korea in the United Nations Security Council; supports a resolution that would outline the major reasons for Security Council intervention, focusing on the failure of the government of North Korea to protect its own people from the most serious of human rights abuses caused by the regime and the consequent threat to international peace and security; urges the government of North Korea to ensure the immediate, safe and unhindered access to all parts of the country for United Nations and international humanitarian organisations to provide assistance to the most vulnerable groups; calls on the government of North Korea to release all political prisoners imprisoned in the vast network of prison camps in the country; further urges the government of North Korea to allow the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in North Korea to visit the country; and calls on the Government to work with UN Security Council members to ensure that a resolution in such terms is adopted.
