MURDER OF PAKISTANI MINISTER ZILL-E-HUMA (26 February 2007)

That this House congratulates the government of Pakistan for making significant moves in ensuring that women are better represented in democracy and politics; notes that over 21 per cent. of the members of the national assembly are women, a figure significantly higher than in the British Parliament; expresses deep regret at the news of the brutal slaying of the provincial minister Zill-e-Huma by a lone fanatic in the Punjab province; expresses its heartfelt sympathies to the family of Zill-e-Huma and to the government of Pakistan; and hopes that this senseless bloodshed will only strengthen the resolve of the government and people of Pakistan to continue working towards a society where women are afforded justice and equality and their rightful place in politics and public life.
