PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
LONG-TERM MANAGEMENT OF RADIOACTIVE WASTE (20 June 2006)
Motion Details
That this House welcomes the draft recommendations of the Committee on Radioactive Waste Management; congratulates the Committee on its wide-ranging consultation and its detailed assessment of the crucial question of how the UK should deal with its radioactive waste in the long-term; believes that the waste must be dealt with in a sustainable and publicly-acceptable manner regardless of any decision on nuclear new-build; further believes that decisions must be taken now on how to move forward with no further delay; recognises that the implementation of a long-term policy will be a major and vital piece of national infrastructure; supports current Government policy on Nirex, the UK's long-term radioactive waste body, being independent of and separate from the nuclear industry, including the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority; agrees that an independent long-term waste body is vital for the successful implementation of the project; and calls for the continuation of this crucial separation.
