PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
DOGS USED AS SHARK BAIT IN REUNION (10 October 2005)

That this House is shocked and appalled at reports of the use of live dogs as bait in shark fishing on the French island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean; notes with disgust that stray dogs are rounded up by local fishermen for such a purpose; further notes that these animals are bound and gagged and are pierced through the muzzle with large hooks causing unspeakable pain; believes that the use of a live animal in this way is unjustifiably cruel; supports the RSPCA's petition against such cruelty; recognises Réunion's status as a French overseas department; therefore calls on members of the public to address their concerns to the French Embassy to help bring this barbaric practice to an instant halt; and strongly urges the French Government to take immediate steps to enforce its animal protection legislation and end this inhumane practice.
