PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
REFLEX SYMPATHETIC DYSTROPHY SYNDROME (23 May 2005)

Motion Details

That this House expresses deep concern at the large and increasing number of people who suffer from reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome, also known as complex regional pain syndrome, and who are not receiving prompt and adequate treatment through the NHS because of a lack of knowledge and appreciation of the condition; acknowledges that the condition can affect anyone following mild trauma and injury or minor surgery; recognises that there are no known cures at the present time but that there are effective treatments; calls on the Government to give priority to much needed and overdue research into this chronic neurological disease to ensure greater dissemination of information regarding the disease and to raise awareness among general practitioners and consultants; urges the medical profession to recommend amputation only as a last resort; and believes that early diagnosis and treatment is vitally important to prevent patients suffering lifelong chronic pain and deformities.
