PARISHES OF WINDERMERE AND LAKES FAIRTRADE STATUS (16 May 2005)

Motion Details

That this House congratulates Windermere and Lakes parishes on being granted Fairtrade status; notes that the parishes of Windermere and Lakes officially gained Fairtrade status on 14th May; recognises that this recent development is part of the successful Fairtrade initiative which continues to make a significant difference to the lives of people across the globe in developing countries by ensuring that those who produce a variety of raw products get a fair deal; welcomes the wider environmental improvements these initiatives produce by allowing the surrounding environment to be managed in a sustainable manner; applauds the recent report by the Fairtrade Foundation that sales of Fairtrade products grew by more than 50 per cent. in the UK last year; and calls on the Government to raise awareness and actively to encourage schools, local authorities and retailers to adopt fair trade principles.
