PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
ZIMBABWE (26 November 2002)

Motion Details

That this House calls on the Government to implement unilaterally a tougher sanctions regime against Robert Mugabe, his financial backers and those who oppress innocent people in his name; expresses frustration at those governments which openly and covertly provide support to the Government of Zimbabwe; further notes the lack of urgent international action to protect the people of Zimbabwe from the policies of selective starvation, deploring the repugnant policy of food-for-votes; welcomes the efforts of food charities to deliver aid to those who are starving, irrespective of tribal or political background; and calls upon the Department for International Development to work more closely with these non-government organisations to get the food through to where it is needed; deplores the unchecked slide to ethnic cleansing; calls upon the international community to engage with South Africa in constructing a financial package whereby South Africa will be compensated for closing her border with Zimbabwe; and calls upon the Government to raise itself from inertia and deal effectively with Robert Mugabe to provide a better future for all Zimbabweans.
