PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL 40TH ANNIVERSARY (9 July 2001)
Motion Details
That this House notes the valuable work done by Amnesty International for 40 years since Peter Benenson appealed in The Observer for 'The Forgotten prisoners'; remembers the vital role of the media in exposing human rights violations and in ensuring that politicians, home and abroad, take notice; asks Her Majesty's Government and people of this country to help Amnesty International's campaign to stamp out torture; recognises that torture is still perpetuated in two-thirds of the world's countries and that people are often tortured because of who they are or for what they believe in rather than for information; and congratulates the winners of this year's Amnesty International UK Media Awards.
