CARDIFF CAPITAL OF CULTURE 2008 (22 April 2002)
Motion Details
That this House wholeheartedly welcomes the bid of the City of Cardiff to become European Capital of Culture in 2008, and wishes the organisers every success with this bid; applauds the aim of Cardiff 2008 to highlight the cultural heritage and traditions of the Welsh capital and the whole of Wales; further welcomes the inclusive nature of the bid, which also celebrates the diversity and multi-culturalism of contemporary Welsh life, showcasing the wealth of talent currently on display in Welsh sport, music, drama, art and architecture; further welcomes and encourages the emphasis placed on the special bilingual nature of Wales and the world-renowned literacy tradition of the country; recognises the benefit to the whole of Wales that a successful bid would bring in terms of employment, tourism and transport; notes the strong support given to the bid from all over Wales and beyond; and believes that Cardiff is in an excellent position to claim the title of European Capital of Culture for 2008.
