PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
CHARGING FOR WITHDRAWALS FROM CASHPOINT MACHINES (21 May 2002)

That this House opposes proposals by the Alliance and Leicester and other banks to charge ú1.25 to customers to withdraw their own money from cashpoint machines; supports the view of the National Association of Bank Customers that many people in remote and rural areas would have no other option other than to pay such a fee; notes that the United Kingdom banking sector achieved pre-tax profits of ú18 billion last year; and calls upon the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry to make urgent representations to the British bankers' Association to bring pressure to bear on those banks who are threatening to either charge for the use of their cashpoints or withdraw them from service.
