PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
POST OFFICE NETWORK (20 May 2002)

Motion Details

That this House notes the uncertain future of thousands of post offices across the country; condemns the Government's mismanagement of the Post Office network, and its hasty decision to remove the right to receive cash benefit payments at local post offices; further notes the genuine concerns as to whether the Universal bank will be fully functioning by April 2003; expresses concern that at that date post offices will lose up to 40 per cent. of their revenue; and deplores the Government's apparent inaction as to the national roll-out of the Your Guide scheme, its lack of coherent proposals for the modernisation of the network and in particular the absence of any plans to support and preserve the rural Post Office network.
