PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
CHLAMYDIA SCREENING FOR MEN (12 June 2002)

That this House notes that the draft National Strategy for Sexual Health and HIV in its section on chlamydia screening makes no mention of the male complications of chlamydia or the need for screening in men; believes however that it is important to screen men and women for chlamydia given that male diagnoses in 1999 rated three to every four female cases and further that under diagnosis is likely to be greater in the case of men since heterosexual men average four partners in five years compared to two for women; recognises that 50 per cent. of men will be asymptomatic and therefore diagnosed only through screening or when a partner becomes symptomatic; and therefore points out the need for more active attempts to uncover infected cases and offer screening for men in a variety of settings including non-healthcare settings such as youth clubs, nightclubs and at music and sports events.
