PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
INVESTING IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT (18 January 2000)
Motion Details
That this House notes the launch of UNISON's Invest for Change campaign; further notes their concerns about rising levels of stress and low morale of local government staff; believes local government has a key role to play in building effective local partnerships, in delivering modern accountable services and regenerating communities; welcomes the new powers for local authorities in community planning and the commitment to introduce a fairer, more transparent system of local government finance; recognises that the implementation of change in local government is resource intensive; calls on the Government to strengthen local democracy through reform of local government finance; and urges the Government to invest sufficient resources in local government to implement change effectively, including the ground-breaking single status agreement.
