PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
HOUSES IN MULTIPLE OCCUPATION AND PRIVATE LANDLORDS (11 January 2000)

Motion Details

That this House recognises the damage being done to housing stock in inner city areas by the rapid growth in the number of houses in multiple occupation and other shared housing; notes the adverse effects of a high concentration of HMOs on community relations and services; and seeks the urgent introduction of legislation empowering local authority planning departments to restrict the conversion of existing family homes into HMOs, in order to maintain a balance in the use of housing stock and protect the longer term needs of the community in such matters as the availability of affordable family housing, the provision of school places, road traffic management, waste collection/street cleaning and community stability.
