PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
EXPORT CREDIT GUARANTEES ON ARMS EXPORTS (13 December 1999)
Motion Details
That this House welcomes Her Majesty's Government's current review of the Export Credits Guarantee Department; is pleased that the review will be fundamental and cover issues beyond those strictly financial, especially how the ECGD can help Her Majesty's Government achieve its wider, sustainable development commitments; further welcomes the statement by Michael Camdessus, Chairman of the International Monetary Fund, that governments should abolish export credit for military purposes; believes that the ECGD must be made more accountable and transparent; further believes that it should have a clear remit to consider development, environment, human rights and security concerns when making its decisions; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to end export credit guarantees for military equipment and to negotiate a European Union-wide ban on the availability of export credit for military exports.
