PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
SAFER COUNTRY LANES AND VILLAGES (8 December 1999)
Motion Details
That this House acknowledges that country lanes are an important feature of the countryside; expresses concern that traffic on rural roads is forecast to grow by more than 50 per cent. over the next 25 years; recognises that the car will continue to be the main form of transport despite the Government's welcome investment in rural public transport and promotion of cycling and walking; welcomes its recognition that speeding traffic can create an intimidating environment for local residents, walkers, cyclists and riders; and calls for legislation to lower speed limits on country lanes, the introduction of speed restrictions in all villages and new powers for local authorities to designate quiet lanes where residents, walkers cyclists and horse riders have legal priority over motorists.
