PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
GOVERNMENT PROPOSALS FOR THE POSTAL SERVICE (7 December 1999)

Motion Details

That this House is extremely concerned about the inevitable closure of post offices throughout Britain due to the Government's proposed reforms to the postal service; notes that the implementation of the Automated Credit Transfer system of paying benefits scheduled for 2003 will put the existence of thousands of post offices at risk, and that the proposed reforms show a total disregard for a fundamental service that lies at the heart of communities, pushing elderly and disadvantaged people further to the margins of society; and calls upon the Government to reconsider these damaging and ill-thought proposals.
