PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
WELSH ASSEMBLY LEADERSHIP ELECTIONS (2 December 1998)

Motion Details

That this House welcomes the election of Rod Richards as leader of the Conservative candidates in Wales; congratulates the Conservative Party for democratically electing the leader in Wales by the one member one vote system; notes by contrast the parachuting in of the Secretary of State for Wales as the favoured candidate of the Prime Minister; deplores the rigged system of voting to elect the Labour leader which denies the use of a fair one member one vote system; further notes the Secretary of State for Wales' comments of 30th November, Official Report, column 639, that 'every member of the Labour Party will have a vote in the selection of the leader of the Labour party in Wales'; but regrets the fact that the unions and the honourable Members and candidates will be able to outvote the wishes of the ordinary rank and file members.
