PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
INTERNATIONAL AIDS VACCINE INITIATIVE (26 November 1998)
Motion Details
That this House congratulates the Government for being the first to contribute financially to the International Aids Vaccine Initiative; recognises that over 30 million people around the world are living with HIV and 11.7 million are already dead, and that 8,500 are becoming infected every day; notes that over 90 per cent of cases are in developing countries, whereas of all the money currently spent on HIV and AIDS treatment, prevention and research only 1 per cent is being spent on HIV vaccine development; therefore asks for significantly more weight to be given to AIDS vaccine development; and calls on the Government through the G8 to persuade all Western governments to contribute substantially to the research so that AIDS can be controlled for the next generation.
