PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
FAR EAST PRISONERS OF WAR (COMPENSATION) (11 March 1999)
Motion Details
That this House notes the Canadian Government's recent decision to pay compensation to ú14,000 to each of its former Far East Prisoners of war or their widows; further notes the statement of the Canadian Minister for Veteran Affairs, the honourable Fred J. Miffin, that 'this is an extraordinary payment to extraordinary individuals who suffered extraordinary hardship while in captivity' and that the payments were an 'expression of the gratitude which Canadians feel for their suffering and sacrifice'; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to take similar action to recognise the sacrifice made by British prisoners of war in the Far East fighting for the United Kingdom.
