PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
CAPTURE OF U110 (2 March 1999)

That this House condemns the plans of Universal Studios to portray the capture of the U110 in 1941 as an American success; notes that the engagement led to the recovery of an Enigma machine and code book, thereby enabling Bletchley Park staff to break the German Navy code and turn the tide in the Battle of the Atlantic; recognises the vital role of the corvette HMS 'Aubretia', whose depth charge attack forced the U110 to the surface, and appreciates the pride of the people of Horsforth who raised ú241,000 to fund the ship; further recognises the role of the destroyer HMS 'Bulldog', whose crew members recovered the Enigma machine and key; and notes that this historic engagement, described by King George VI as the most important naval action of the war, took place before the United States entered the conflict.
