PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
LABOUR PARTY AND ELECTIONS (24 February 1999)

Motion Details

That this House regrets that Labour Party members in Wales have had their democratic wishes to have the honourable Member for Cardiff West as the leader of the Wales Labour Party thwarted by the use of the trade union block vote and the Millbank-inspired rigged electoral college; further notes that the Right honourable Member for Cardiff South and Penarth will have no credibility as Leader of the Labour Party in Wales, and that his position as Secretary of State for Wales has been greatly undermined; and congratulates the Panorama programme of 16th February for exposing the undemocratic way in which the leadership of the Labour Party is putting the interests of the Labour Party before that of the people by denying them their democratic wishes in a free choice of candidates for the European elections, and denying other candidates who are popular with their own members the opportunity to stand for either the Scottish Parliament or as Mayor of London.
