PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
COMPANY CAR MILEAGE (8 February 1999)

Motion Details

That this House notes that company cars have a larger average engine size than the national car fleet as a whole; notes with concern that mileage done by company car drivers not in the course of work is more than twice the national average, substantially adding to excessive fuel consumption, congestion and pollution; therefore calls on Government and businesses to introduce measures to reduce the amount of discretionary non-business mileage done in company cars; and in particular commends non-fiscal steps to curb unnecessary journeys such as the placing of prominent company adverts on all company vehicles, to reduce the association in the minds of drivers between the use of such cars and enhanced personal prestige and status.
