PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
ECONOMIC SITUATION OF THE PIG INDUSTRY (18 January 1999)
Motion Details
That this House supports the British pig industry in its demands for a fair deal for pig farmers and its intention to lobby Parliament on 23rd January; notes that despite suffering record numbers of bankruptcies the industry was not helped by the Government's emergency aid package last November; appreciates that the demands from the pig industry are not for handouts but for a fair deal in the face of unfair competition from abroad and increased financial burdens at home; calls on the Government to ensure that only pork reared in the United Kingdom can be labelled as British and to implement a ban on pig meat and pig meat products imported into the United Kingdom that do not meet the standards required of the meat produced within the United Kingdom; and urges the Government to reduce the new burdens that British farmers face this year that amount to ú2 million a day.
