PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
PROVISION OF LOCAL RECYCLING SCHEMES (28 March 1999)
Motion Details
That this House calls for statutory changes to the Environmental Protection Act 1990 requiring local authorities to provide recycling services to their communities; recognises that such changes would complement Her Majesty's Government's policy of less waste, more value by maximising the sustainability of Britain's waste capacity, and safeguard the future of the British environment; acknowledges the positive effects which this policy has had in reducing the need for landfill amongst the United Kingdom's EU partners; welcomes the new policy guidance to local authorities on waste management and the Chancellor's recent increases in landfill tax; further acknowledges the under-use of the United Kingom's paper recycling capacity last year and believes that legal changes could correct this and consequently aid government policy by reducing land-fill; and praises the tremendous cost benefits of recycling aluminium, and the various measures taken by that industry to improve energy efficiency in recent years.
