PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
STUDY OF ANGLO-SAXON HISTORY (13 July 1999)

Motion Details

That this House deplores the decision by the Oxford and Cambridge Examination Board to remove the study of the Anglo-Saxon period from their A-level History syllabus; believes that the study of this period can provide a unique opportunity for history students to develop critical faculties and foster imagination given the challenges posed by the type of historical evidence that is available to scholars on the Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings; acknowledges that during this period there were key developments in the country's political, religious and legal institutions and culture which still affect the lives of our citizens today; and urges the Oxford and Cambridge Examination Board to rescind this decision immediately.
