PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
ROAD RUNNING (26 June 1997)
Motion Details
That this House notes the guidelines issued by the Association of Chief Police Officers concerning events on public highways; expresses concern about the way in which these guidelines are being interpreted and their impact upon road running events; notes that at least 10 races organised under the auspices of the British Association of Road Races have been cancelled as a result of the ACPO guidelines; is concerned that increased costs of policing, charges for road closures and insurance as a direct result of the ACPO guidelines threaten many of the more than 300 road races organised by members of the BARR and more than 300 other events organised by other clubs and charities; and calls upon the Home Secretary to liaise with ACPO and the Secretary of State for National Heritage to ensure the continued success of road running as a popular sport.
