PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
KESKERDH KERNOW: MARCH OF THE CORNISH PEOPLE (16 June 1997)
Motion Details
That this House welcomes the heroic band of marchers who have walked the 330 miles from St. Keverne in Cornwall to London, marking the 500th anniversary of the march by 15,000 Corni shmen in an act of rebellion against Henry VII; congratulates the organisers and the many thousands of Cornish and non-Cornish supporters of the many festivities and celebrations that have been arranged to acknowledge this significant event in Cornish history; and supports the demands of local people 500 years on, for (i) recognition of Cornwall's distinctive cultural, linguistic and historical case, (ii) the need for a Cornish Assembly, (iii) the campaign for a powerful Cornish economic development body, (iv) the establishment of a university college in Cornwall and (v) a fair deal for Cornish residents with regard to water bills, economic development aid, policing, education and affordable housing.
