PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
TUITION FEES AT SCOTTISH UNIVERSITIES (11 November 1997)
Motion Details
That this House notes with grave concern that the Government's proposals to impose tuition fees will result in English, Welsh and Northern Irish students paying up to ú1000 more to follow four-year higher education courses in Scotland than their Scottish and European counterparts; believes that this is an unjust and unacceptable situation; further believes that this will deter many students from attending Scottish universities; notes that these proposals will threaten the survival of the courses and departments which depend upon the English, Welsh and Northern Irish students who choose to take degrees in Scotland; urges the Government to recognise this as an issue which affects the whole of the United Kingdom; and calls on the Government to treat all students attending Scottish universities equally.
