PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
THAMES WATER (WATER METERING) (10 November 1997)
Motion Details
That this House notes with concern that customers of Thames Water are being forced to have water meters installed; recognises that the Government is currently undertaking a review of the methods of charging for water; recognises that the widespread introduction of metering pre-empts the outcome of that review; calls on Thames Water to stop misinforming its customers that every home will be metered by the year 2000; further notes with concern that Ofwat is encouraging the introduction of water meters ahead of the Government's review; welcomes the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions' restatement of the Government's 'opposition to compulsory metering for essential use'; and calls on water companies to comply with the 10 point plan set out by the Deputy Prime Minister at the Water Summit and cease the enforced introduction of water meters until the outcome of the government's review is known.
