PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
H.E. DR EUGENE CHIEN - TAIPEI REPRESENTATIVE IN THE UK (4 November 1997)
Motion Details
That this House salutes Dr Eugene Chien as Representative of the Republic of China on Taiwan for the last four and a half years; congratulates him on his new post as National Security Advisory at the President's Office in Taiwan; acknowledges that two-way trade between Taiwan and the United Kingdom at ú3.3 billion is a 66 per cent. increase, whilst he has been in office; applauds the fact that Taiwan views the United Kingdom as the most favourable site in Europe to invest with 80 per cent. of its European investment here; notes that the United Kingdom is the largest investor in Taiwan's stockmarket; welcomes the increased number of Taiwanese students to British universities, which has increased from 3,000 to 13,000 during Dr Chien's term of office; further applauds the 58 per cent. increase compared with 1992 in the number of British visitors travelling to Taiwan, 54,000 estimated in all; thanks Dr Chien for all that he has done in promoting relations between the two countries; and sends him and his wife, Gwendolyn, our very best wishes for the future.
