PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
PRESERVATION OF BRITISH PIERS (6 July 1997)
Motion Details
That this House applauds the success of the Year of the Pier, organised by the National Piers Society and the British Association of Leisure Parks, Piers and Attractions; congratulates them on their efforts in focusing attention on the cultural, entertainment and leisure value of Britain's seaside piers; welcomes the first allocations of National Lottery grants to Swanage, Clevedon and Brighton West piers, to help restore the precious heritage of seaside piers which, being built in Victorian and Edwardian eras, now suffer high maintenance costs and weather damage; and recognises that, as well as being a necessary step in preserving and renewing a vital part of Britain's national heritage, the restoration of piers will create jobs, add charm to Britain's coastal resorts, strengthen and encourage the tourist industry, provide more fun for all and hand these proud piers of the realm on to future generations for their enjoyment.
