PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
AGE DISCRIMINATION (12 January 1998)
Motion Details
That this House welcomes Age Concern's intention to hold an Age Discrimination Week in the first week of February; considers that this will help raise awareness among the general public, politicians and the media about age discrimination in health services, employment, social security, consumer affairs and other areas; calls upon the Government to respond with legislation in the 1998-99 parliamentary session to ban age discrimination in a similar way to legislation outlawing race, sex and disability discrimination; notes that this would tie in with the 1999 UN Year for Older Persons; further notes that the Second Reading of the Age Discrimination (Employment) Bill is due to take place on 6th February; and therefore hopes that this House will show its commitment early in this parliamentary session to ending age discrimination by giving this limited bill to ban age limits in job advertisements an unopposed second reading.
