PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
FIRE-FIGHTERS (17 December 1997)

That this House acknowledges the splendid work of the fire-fighters who tackled the fire at Heathrow Airport in the early hours of 12th December where, despite the very difficult circumstances, they restricted damage to just five per cent. of the building concerned; thereby saving the country many millions of pounds, and safeguarding economic investment as well as protecting life and limb; and as a result justifying the improved and welcomed local government settlement for the fire service in 1998-99 which must be sustained in future if brigades are to deal with the problems brought about by growing pensions liabilities.
