PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
JUBILEE 2000 (9 March 1998)
Motion Details
That this House believes that the dawn of the new millennium should be the time to give renewed hope to the impoverished peoples of the world; that it is right to start anew and put aside past mistakes made by international lenders and borrowers; that such a jubilee should encompass the cancellation of the backlogs of unpayable debts saddling most impoverished nations; and therefore calls upon Her Majesty's Government to exert vigorously all available influence to persuade the leaders of governments of all lending nations to write off these debts by the year 2000 and internationally to formulate collective policies of Third World aid that will result in effective support where needed, and henceforth avoid the accrual of such debilitating debt levels ever again.
