PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
SWIMMING POOL SAFETY (5 April 1998)
Motion Details
That this House extends its deepest sympathy and condolences to the family of six-year-old James Smith, who drowned in a swimming pool of the Fiesta Sahara Apartments hotel in Magaluf, Spain on 14th June 1997; believes that James died because the hotel was not prepared to employ lifeguards; is concerned that many countries, including Britain, do not require hotel and resort complexes to employ swimming pool lifeguards; notes that Thomson Holidays, ABTA, and the Federation of Tour Operators agree that Europe-wide action should be taken to raise safety standards within the holiday industry; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to take appropriate action to obtain an EU directive on swimming pool safety.
