PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
LANDMINES (No. 2) (29 March 1998)
Motion Details
That this House welcomes the Government's signing of the Ottawa Treaty which when ratified will ban the manufacture, trade and operational use of all anti-personnel landmines and obliges countries to clear minefields within 10 years, destroy stockpiles within four years and assist survivors; calls on the Government to ratify the Treaty rapidly, since it will only become operational after 40 countries have ratified it; notes that, so far, only seven countries have ratified; and believes the United Kingdom could take a lead by encouraging others to sign up.
