PARLIAMENTARY EARLY DAY MOTION
HUMAN RIGHTS IN CHINA (24 March 1998)

Motion Details

That this House calls on Her Majesty's Government to review the human rights situation in China over the next year, given its decision not to endorse a resolution criticising China's record on human rights during the current session of the United Nations Human Rights Commission in Geneva; notes that in 1997 the EU consensus on a draft resolution collapsed when France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Greece decided not to support a resolution; observes that Her Majesty's Government believes that it can pursue the same objectives through an EU-China human rights dialogue; but believes that Her Majesty's Government should continue to voice its continuing concerns at every appropriate opportunity, including the UN, and should keep its policy constantly under review.
